Coach Reed is the Executive Director of Soccer Shots East and South San Diego – a “Child’s First Soccer Experience” that serves roughly 5,000 families in the San Diego area with a goal of Strengthening Youth Beyond the Game.
Prior to Soccer Shots, Coach Reed was in the US Youth Soccer realm in various leadership roles as Director of Coaching and Executive Director of large, nationally successful soccer clubs. In those roles, he worked with thousands of players and trained hundreds of other coaches in elite playing and coaching methods.
He has coached at all levels including Collegiate, Olympic Development, and even a stint as a Professional Coach in the NPSL. During his 26-year career of coaching he produced All-Americans, National Team players, and professional players but his passion always lead him back to working with the very young players and his philosophy of creating excellence Beyond the Game drove him to focus on more than just coaching soccer. He believes the obligation of great coaches is to prepare young players for success after the game has ended.
Coach Reed is also an internationally renowned speaker and author whose talks, videos, articles, and radio appearances have reach more than 4 million people in 171 countries in the last 18 months. He has presented keynote speeches and training seminars to the governing bodies for hockey, basketball and soccer and worked with clubs, schools, and statewide athletic associations on developing better coaching communication, creating cultures of excellence, and managing growth mindsets in athletes.
He is also a member of John O’Sullivan’s Changing the Game Project – which is focused on returning youth sports to the children and providing the most influential adults in their lives, parents and coaches, with the information and resources needed to make sports a positive, healthy, and rewarding experience. In this role he has met with parents, players, coaches, and administrators in most sports to discuss topics such as specialization, communication, culture building, and developing a better youth sport coaching model.
A former elite level athlete himself, Coach Reed hung up the cleats to attain two Master’s Degrees – one in Sport Behavior & Performance and one in Early Childhood Education. His 26 years of success on and off the field are an indication that coaching education needs more work outside the X’s and O’s to produce more effective coaches. He feels coaches should be trained in child development, educational theory, communication, and much more to be better educators.
In July 2015, he gave a powerful TED Talk that took the youth sport world by storm and propelled him into the public conscience of youth sport leaders all over the world. He went from talking about how we could find a better way to coach the game to helping train others on exactly how to do it.
Since 2015, he has been a guest on more than two dozen radio shows and podcasts including Sirius XM FC and ESPN Radio to discuss the hot button issues in youth sports today. Coach Reed also writes and presents online training/webinars for Amplified Soccer Magazine, SoccerNation.com, SoccerParenting.com, The Player Development Project, and The National Soccer Coaches Association of America among others.
Coach Reed’s biggest mission is to create a “100 Year Echo” – if we provide a better youth sport experience the echoes of what we do and say can still be heard 100 years from now. His daily mantra, borrowed from Scott Berkun, is evidence of his commitment to change lives beyond the game:
“All progress hinges on the gap between those who will talk in private and those who will act in public”.
