Soccer Commentator, Former USWNT Captain
Julie Foudy is the former Captain of the US Women’s National Team & current sports an analyst for ABC/ESPN and the NBC Olympics. In her 17-year national team tenure, the U.S. women won two FIFA Women’s World Cup titles (1991, 1999), captured two Olympic gold medals (1996, 2004), and the silver medal in 2000 –becoming one of the most successful and recognizable national soccer teams ever in the sport. Foudy finished her National Team career with 45 goals, 59 assists and 272 international appearances (caps) for the USA. Her 272 caps rank third in the world all-time, male or female.
Most important to Foudy, she has made a difference off the field as well. She was accepted into Stanford University’s Medical School but decided not to pursue a career in medicine. She founded the Julie Foudy Sports Leadership Academy (JFSLA) in 2006, along with her husband Ian Sawyers. The JFSLA is a unique residential camp experience that uses sports as the vehicle to teach leadership skills for life. They simultaneously opened founded the Julie Foudy Leadership Foundation to provide scholarships to young women from all socioeconomic backgrounds to become leaders who positively impact their communities.
Foudy was the President of the Women’s Sports Foundation from 2000-2002. She has served on the Women’s Sports Foundation Board of Directors and on the Board of Directors for the WUSA (the professional women’s soccer league) and currently sits on the board of Athletes for Hope. Foudy is the global spokeswoman for Global Girl Media, a new non-profit helping young women around the world find their voice through journalism, as well as ambassador for Beyond Sport, a global organization that promotes, develops and funds the use of sport to create positive social change across the world.
Julie was inducted in the US National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2007, alongside longtime teammate and friend, Mia Hamm. Foudy and Mia were only the 6th and 7th women ever to be inducted into the Hall of Fame and the first ever ALL FEMALE induction class. Additionally, she has received the FIFA Fair Play Award; an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from Smith College; was honored by the National Women’s Law Center, and been named as one of the “100 Most Influential NCAA Student-Athletes.”
In 2017, Foudy released her book Choosing to Matter: Being Courageously and Fabulously You. The book serves as a roadmap for unleashing one’s courageous side and have them singing their dreams out loud.
Foudy currently resides in San Clemente, CA, with her husband, Ian, and their two children.
